With
the dissolution of boundaries between work and life, flexible labour practices
are promoted by enterprise as ameliorative methods for managing (Boltanski and
Chiapello 1999). New technological devices have arisen to assist in toggling
between shifting employment roles and private lives (Russell Hochschild 2012).
Rather than presenting the promised functionality of life management devices as
options to be individually selected and employed, Variations of Assembly seeks to situate the audience experientially within a meshwork of human-machine
inter-active practices. The drive here is to
reflect and embody interactive human-machine relations sufficiently that we
might understand the terms of our interaction with them, even when we cannot
map their exact procedures.
